CoolCleveland.com picked up my post on BFD about AT&T’s U-Verse (aka Project Lightspeed).

Here in Lakewood, U-Verse has been a pretty hot topic of discussion, ever since City Council approved the project. As AT&T has been installing their hideously large VRAD boxes all over Lakewood, more boxes than originally planned, excitement about the project has quickly devolved into resentment.

A recent Lakewood Observer article points out this frustration from Ward 1 councilman Kevin Butler. “This project no longer resembles what we agreed to three years ago. There are many more installation locations than I remember in the original agreement and the number of boxes per location has increased.” According to the original Lakewood Observer article (PDF), the original plans called for 43 boxes. The current count is at 50 and rising (another box is being installed on W. Clifton as I write this).

Meanwhile, Comcast is running ads in U-Verse markets poking fun at the hideous boxes. Finally, others are starting to take notice.

Om Malik (of GigaOM) also reports on the U-Verse issues.
