Pizza: A Slice of Americana

With the hubbub over Papa John’s, this has me thinking about how pizza is such an important part of the American food landscape.

Myself, and pretty much everyone I knew, grew up loving pizza. It’s a staple of American food. If you ask a child what his or her favorite food is, pizza will be at the top of that list, or very near the top. I’m sure pizza is one of the most highly-consumed foods on the planet, if not, at least here in the US.

My post over at BFD has touched off a pretty lively discussion about people’s favorite pizza shops. I’m lucky to live within walking distance of one of Cleveland’s best, Angelo’s Pizza. Their pizza is seriously addictive: there’s something about the way they make their crust that makes me want more.

Roman Fountain is a very close second. Their Double Play is one of my favorites.

I really wish I lived close to my all-time favorite: Donte’s Pizza in Berea. Their white pizza is to die for: loaded with garlic and coated with tons of cheese, there is no comparison.

There is a Dewey’s Pizza going up on this side of town. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Dewey’s, so it will be interesting to see how it pans out (pun intended!).

The Papa John’s story is going to go down in history as either really good marketing or really bad public relations.

I’m not a huge fan of Papa John’s (always found their sauce a little too sweet and their crust a little too dry). My faves are Rascal House, Augie’s in North Royalton, and Zeppe’s. Only tried Dewey’s once (I think at WRUW’s Studio-a-Rama 2005); it was good, wouldn’t mind trying it again.

Bar Cento’s pizza is good, too, but I would have to order more than one because 1. it’s extremely thin-crust and therefore not very filling 2. it’s highly addictive.
